|副題||Japanese Culture as Seen by Japanese|
The goal of this course is to apply students' understanding of intercultural communication to the text and to their own experiences, to discuss in class, and then to write research papers or essays on these topics in English.
In this seminar we will use as our text a book of essays on various aspects of Japanese culture written by Japanese. As we read and discuss the different topics which the writers take up, it should be interesting to see what students agree or disagree with and what new insights they can get into their own culture. Each week we will read about 20 pages of the text and prepare to discuss various related topics in class. Students will be actively involved in presenting and discussing the text and topics. Students will write their thoughts and impressions about what they read in a journal each week and will also write a mid-term and a final report on a topic related to our study. Of course, the entire seminar will be taught and conducted only in English.
Students will need to spend 2-3 hours each week studying the textbook in preparation for class discussions and another 2 hours in preparation for their group presentation of the text.
Grades will be based on attendance and participation in class (30%), presentations (30%), and term reports (40%).
