授業の到達目標
This class will equip students with basic skills for academic writing in English. Building on the skills that they already have, there will be emphasis on building well-written paragraphs into an essay. Students will also learn correct ways of referencing when presenting sources for an essay.  

授業の内容
This course looks at how to build well-written paragraphs into an academic essay. In addition to revision of, and work on, basic writing skills, there will be work on invaluable skills such as quoting, summarising and paraphrasing. Discussion will take place on the rules of academic writing and the importance of correct and accurate citation of sources. There will be work both on writing exercises in class and and for homework which students will be required to write using "Word" documents, and to submit to the instructor at times by email.

Students will be required to spend at least four hours per week preparing for, and reviewing, this class. Further instruction will be given on the details of this each time, but students can expect weekly writing exercises to be completed outside class and submitted to the instructor.  

成績評価の方法
Evaluation will be based on students' performance in class, on regular written exercises and tests given in class.

第1週Introduction. Thoughts on academic English. Essays. What are they for?
第2週Coming up with ideas for an essay. Brainstorming, listing and other techniques for gathering and organising information
第3週Organising an essay (from paragraph to essay)
第4週Starting out. The thesis statement.
第5週Organising your information. What is important? What needs to be said? What can be left out?
第6週Basic structures and successful conclusions. Presenting information coherently and well.
第7週Basic structures and successful conclusions. Presenting information, arguing and persuading.
第8週Plagiarism. References, citations and how to write them.
第9週Quotations. Using them successfully, and correctly.
第10週Breaking down information. Summarising.
第11週Paraphrasing. Uses and dangers. Practical techniques.
第12週A further look at beginning well and ending well. Final thoughts.
