授業の到達目標
The goal of the course is help the students develop better reading skills.  

授業の内容
The course is divided into two sections, an intensive and extensive reading program. In the intensive section of the course we will study the skills and approaches that help a reader understand a text. Secondly the students will be expected to read extensively. To achieve this aim the students will read and write book reports on the graded readers supplied in the class and in the library.  

教材
教科書:Chris Gough, Essential reading- book two, (Macmillan Press)
Students will be expected to have a dictionary in every class.

準備学習(予習・復習)の内容又はそれに必要な時間
For every class will be expected to read extensively and by the end of the semester
they will be expected to have read 600 pages. Each student will keep a vocabulary
book and each week they will have to increase the number of words by 10 so at the
end of the semester the students will have to increase by 150 words. Every three
weeks there will be a vocabulary test on what words they have added to their books.
Finally the students will be doing homework from the textbook.  

成績評価の方法
The students will be graded on four criteria:
1) Book reports and reading progress (Minimum of 600 pages)(40%)
2) Vocabulary Book ( 20%)
3) Class tests - Every chapter will have a (20%)
4) Attitude in class that is willingness to co-operate with tasks in the classroom.(20%)

授業計画
第1週Introduction to reading, the course and what is expected throughout the semester. In this class there will be an explanation of the grades, what the students will do during the semester.
第2週Introduction to reading, explanation of intensive and extensive reading.
第3週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading chapter One - Culture Shock -Cultural differences, Skill - Reading for detail, Extensive Reading, How to select a story/book? Students will decide what types of stories, they like.
第4週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter One - Culture Shock - Doing things differently, Skill - Identifying facts & opinions, Extensive Reading
第5週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Test - Chapter one, Extensive Reading, Students will select the first book and their level will be evaluated.
第6週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading - Chapter Two - Chewing for a better grade, Reading Skills - Activating a Topic, Extensive Reading - In this class the students will review the books they have started to read. Students will be given book reports and they will taught how to write, the reports.
第7週Intensive Reading - Chapter two - A sticky problem, Skill- Identifying facts & opinions, Discussion on chewing gum, Extensive Reading - Evaluation of first book reports. Introduction of vocabulary books - the students will be taught about the value of, increasing their vocabulary. The aspects of the vocabulary books that will be taught will be, Each new vocabulary word will have to have a sentence that the students will make themselves. Each word will have collocations and the students must research how the word is used. To remember the, will draw a picture. The students will write the English meaning in their own words. Finally the students will have to research synonyms and antonyms of the word.

第9週Intensive Reading, Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter Three - Profcasts, Skill -Understanding references, Essential Reading - Chapter Three - Profcasts, Skill - Activating Vocabulary, Extensive Reading, Checking book reports and vocabulary books
第10週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter Three -CD vs Vinyl, Skill - Reading for detail, Extensive Reading, Check reading reports
第11週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter Test Three, Extensive Reading, Evaluate how many pages the students have read and how many vocabulary words they memorized.
第12週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter Four - Urban life
第13週Essential Reading Chapter Four - Living in the city, Skill - Vocabulary in context
第14週Intensive Reading, Essential Reading Chapter Test four, The students will have an oral vocabulary test of the words they have, studied during the semester.
第15週Checking the number book report pages read. Review of the semester's study.
Will follow the chapters of the book.
Every week there will be speed reading and reading skill exercises.
